How to Clear Cache on iPhone

clear iPhone cache

It’s very important to perform good housekeeping tasks on your iPhone from time to time. Performing tasks like deleting any unused apps, organizing photos, and clear cache on iPhone helps your phone to run faster and for you to be more efficient when using your phone.

This article provides an overview into how to clear cache on iPhone.

Why would you need to clear cache on iPhone?

  • You are running out of available space on your phone. This is especially a problem for people that have an iPhone with a smaller amount of memory on them.

  • You are finding that you don’t have enough room on your phone to download some cool big new apps that you want to get.

  • You are concerned about privacy.

  • You are doing housekeeping on your phone including deleting unwanted apps and photos, and reorganizing your files.

Different apps have different caches

You can’t simply clear your entire iPhone cache at once, unfortunately. While most people may be familiar with clearing their Safari web browser cache, the truth of the matter is that, other apps are often the culprits when it comes to their caches taking up excess space.

While it’s possible that you can download an app that can do complete cache deletion across your apps, the majority of these all-in-one cache cleaning apps are not really necessary, and may be considered bloatware.

Clearing the Safari cache

Safari is usually the go-to Internet browser of  iOS users. Like you do on your laptop, clearing your cache every once in a while is good practice to make sure that you are keeping things fresh, not being tracked, and your history is not being monitored by someone else!

To clear the Safari cache:

  1. Tap on your Settings app.
  2. Look for Safari.
  3. Scroll down and select Clear History and Website Data.
  4. Confirm and select Clear History and Data.

Clearing another iPhone app’s cache

You can clear the caches of your apps by accessing the iPhone memory storage area on your phone. Here’s how you clear each app’s cache, one by one.

1. Open your Settings app by tapping on it.

2. Go to General and then Storage & iCloud Usage.

3. Select Manage Storage.

4. Now choose an app from the list provided.

5. Select Documents & Data.

6. Hit Edit and then Delete on any app that you want to remove the data from.

Note that if you choose to do this, you will remove all the app’s data from your phone but not any cloud storage. For instance, if you do this with the Facebook app, your messages will still be stored on the Facebook servers. It just simply no longer available locally on your phone. You will need to log in to the apps again using your credentials (user ID and password) so make sure that you remember them or are able to recover them from email!

Deleting and reinstalling apps

If you are running really low on space, then deleting and reinstalling an app could be another option to free up some memory on your iPhone. Remember, this will delete all the app’s data off your phone and you will need to re-enter your credentials (user ID and password if necessary) once you’ve downloaded the app again.

How to delete and reinstall an app on iPhone:

  1. Ensure you are on the Home screen.
  2. Press and hold the app you’d like to delete until it starts to jiggle.
  3. Press the cross that appears at the top corner of the jiggling app.
  4. Go to the App Store and search for the app.
  5. Download the app again. Use Wi-Fi so that you don’t go over your data allowance.
  6. Open your newly downloaded app and enter your user credentials to log in.

Cleaning out your cache every now and again, or rather your caches, is essential to keep your iPhone running smoothly. Data accumulates on your phone over time which can take up an extremely large amount of memory in the long run.

Choose to free up space on your iPhone by cleaning up your apps and browser as well. You might find that you are surprised at how much faster your phone will run!
