A super easy way to recover iPad files from your backups is by using the Dr. Fone software. You can do a whole bunch of things with Dr. Fone, but the most important parts – recovering your backups from either or both iTunes and iCloud, are what we’re going to focus on today.
Now you may not even be sure you’ve made a backup of your iPad. Lucky for you, unknowingly, you usually create backups. Do you have iTunes on your computer? Have you ever plugged in the iPad to your computer? Sync your device with your iTunes account? If this is the case, you will have most likely made a backup file of all the data on your iPad. This happens in the background while you’re syncing with your iTunes and the file is squirreled away under iTunes on your computer.
And as for iCloud backups? If your iPad has a stock-standard setup (i.e. you didn’t choose to forego iCloud backing up when you originally set up your iPad) then you’ll likely have iCloud backups. Your iOS device automatically backs itself up when it’s charging with the wifi connected to some source.
Even if you’re not sure whether you’ve backed up and you’d like to try and restore it, then Dr. Fone can walk you through all the steps to see if you can get your files back from backups.
Dr. Fone works with all iPads – iPad, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad Mini, iPad Mini 2 and iPad Mini 3, so whichever generation you own, Dr. Fone is compatible with your device.
The software is available for download for both PC and Mac users and is a multiple-use software for all iOS devices. This means that you can use it as many times as you want to manage your backups for your devices running iOS – that includes your iPhone and your iPod Touch as well!
Below is a detailed description on how to restore iPad from backup, both from your iTunes and iCloud account.
Recover From Your iTunes Backup
When you start up your Dr. Fone software, you’ll be able to choose which recovery method you’d like to use. For your iTunes backup, select Recover from iTunes Backup File. If there are backups made, you’ll see it listed in the files below. Choose the correct device and then select Start Scan to scan your iPad backup file.
Information will start filling up on the left, center and right of the page. The left hand column shows the types of data the scan is recovering, the middle shows an overview from the selected data type, and the right shows specific pieces of data. If you wish to retrieve everything, make sure each of the data types on the left are checked. Otherwise, if you want to leave some things out, uncheck them in the middle pane.
Once you have finished selecting what files you’d restore, click Recover to save the requested data onto your computer. You can then resync this data with your iPad.
Recover From Your iCloud Backup
To recover data using your iCloud backup file, select the option in Dr. Fone to Recover from iCloud Backup File. You will need to sign in to your Apple account to retrieve backups you’ve made. This is the same account you use to purchase apps on the Apple store and usually your Apple ID is your email.
After you log in to your iCloud account, you’ll see a list of all your Apple iOS devices – these are your backup files for each of your device/s. Scroll through to find your iPad then choose the Download option to start getting the backup file from your iCloud account. This may take a little while depending on your download speed. Make sure everything has downloaded before you start doing anything.
There you’ll have all the data available that was in your iPad backup file displayed by category, with each piece of data available for your perusal in the middle pane. To just grab everything, make sure all the boxes on the left are checked (these are the categories of files that were recovered) and select Recover. If you’d just like to choose bits and pieces, go through each file type and select the individual items, then select Recover. The selected data will be saved to your computer in which you can choose to resync it back to the iPad.
