How to Retrieve Voicemail on iPhone

Voicemails are ubiquitous.

No professional (or even personal) phone is complete without custom greetings that prompt callers to leave messages if the call can’t be attended immediately.

Apple though has a special advantage for its users. iPhones allow you to transfer and save voicemails as voice memos. This is extremely convenient and provides simpler access to information that is contained in these mails.

But what happens when an iPhone suffers physical device trauma, liquid damage, processor overheating or virus corruption? Retrieving voicemails and voice memos may become a challenge because Apple practices seamless hardware-software integration.

Under such circumstances, Dr. Fone from Wondershare proves to be a handy tool that can conduct scans in three comprehensive modes for a maximum probability of full data recovery.

Before Diving into the Tutorial, Here are a Few Things to Keep in Mind:

1.     If the voicemails are to be recovered from the iPhone itself, the scan should be initiated as soon as data loss is detected. Otherwise, applications may start to overwrite the data in the deeper recesses of the storage/memory rendering the attempt compromised.

2.     An iPhone can’t be scanned unless it is in Device Firmware Upgrade (DFU) mode. To reach DFU:

  • Press the Power button for 3 seconds.
  • Press the Power and Home buttons together for 10 seconds.
  • Press the Home button for 15 more seconds but release the Power button.

Dr. Fone provides an animated guide to aid users since the countdowns need to be quite precise.

3.     If the iPhone has to be connected to a computer that also supports its iTunes account, automatic data synchronization has to be disabled by visiting the dashboard, clicking Preferences, scrolling to Devices and checking ‘Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically’.

Different Modes How to Retrieve Voicemail on iPhone

Mode 1: Recover from iOS Device

Recovery from an iOS device without Dr. Fone is extremely tedious. But with the utility, the process is done in five simple steps.

1.     Connect the iPhone from which voicemails have to be retrieved to a PC or laptop where Dr. Fone is installed. This can be done with a USB cable.

2.     With the connection established, launch Dr. Fone and allow the system to analyze the connected iPhone for compatibility. If a match is found, the ‘Start Scan’ button becomes available. Presently Dr. Fone supports all possible iPhone models including the iPhone 6/6s Plus and its immediate predecessor.

3.     The scan either initiates spontaneously if the iPhone is in DFU mode or it needs to be sent into Device Firmware Upgrade by following the steps discussed in the previous section.

4.     A scan that is underway has a completion bar to the top of the screen noting the time needed to finish the process and the ‘Stop’ and ‘Pause’ buttons to the right of this bar. Both prove useful when a scan has to be halted or terminated midway for recovery on the fly. The directory to the left of the screen shows different data types that can be retrieved and the number of files from each category as identified. This makes navigation, selection and progress gauging easier.

5.     When a scan finishes, the display screen is presented to users. They can choose the node corresponding to Voice Memos and examine the files that can be recovered. The search bar on the upper right helps pull up items by name or keyword, while the On/Off slider narrows the search to just deleted data. Appropriate checkboxes can be ticked to choose files individually or in bulk.

The selected voicemails can be reinstated to the connected iPhone or can be saved to the hard disk of the PC or laptop supporting Dr. Fone.

Mode 2: Recover from iTunes Backup File

iTunes happens to be a backup platform that has been around for many years. It saves Apple device content securely so that data loss from an iPhone doesn’t result in irretrievable loss of the items.

1.     Launch Dr. Fone from the dashboard and choose the second option ‘Recover from iTunes Backup File’.

2.     This allows users access to a comprehensive list of backup containers. They must choose the file that is most likely to hold the voicemails to be retrieved. This is possible on the basis of qualifiers like name of file, date of creation and file size. Once the right backup is selected, click ‘Start Scan’ to trigger the process.

3.     On scan completion, users can check the display screen and recover the required data.

Mode 3: Recover from iCloud Backup File

iCloud is more streamlined and convenient than iTunes because it can be accessed from the iPhone itself. It doesn’t require establishing a physical connection with a computer for the backup to go through, thus iCloud’s use and adoption is greater than iTunes’.

1.     Launch Dr. Fone and click on the third option – Recover from iCloud Backup File.

2.     Input the iCloud login details. Signing in allows Dr. Fone access to the iCloud account content on Apple’s servers.

3.     Users are then expected to identify the backup file that contains all the voicemails tagged for recovery. As in the case of iTunes retrieval, file attributes like name, size and date of creation assist the process. Hitting the ‘Download’ button brings on a pop-up.

4.     Through this pop-up, users can choose the exact data types they wish to download from the Apple servers and then scan. For the purpose of this tutorial, ‘Voicemails’ and ‘Voice memos’ are to be chosen. Clicking ‘Next’ triggers the actual scan.

5.     As always, users can choose files for recovery from the display screen and save them to the computer hard disk.

  • Connect the iPhone to Dr. Fone.
  • Choose the recovery mode.
  • Select the right backup file (if the mode calls for it).
  • Allow the scan to complete.
