iPads are fantastic for taking videos on. Whether it’s your three year old niece’s dance recital, the surfing trip along the coast with the boys, an awesome new song you found, or your latest video blog to put up on YouTube, they’re great for capturing and playing footage with a clear view. However, transferring across from your iPad to your computer can often be very frustrating.
While, in some cases, you may be able to easily do it from iTunes, in others, it doesn’t work at all. If you are looking for an easy way how to transfer videos from iPad to Mac computer, we recommend downloading a third party tool to help out. It’s also handy if you don’t have the version of iTunes that your iPad is synced with on your computer.
Using a Third Party Tool
You can easily grab all your media files from your iPad by using a third party tool instead. We recommend Wondershare’s TunesGo. It’s a tool that helps with transferring all your media files over to your computer for backup and easy access.
Download TunesGo on your Mac to get started with transferring your videos. Make sure that you install the software in an easy to remember location for later access. Once you have completed downloading and installing the software, launch it from the installation folder.
You will now need to find your iPad data cable. Plug in the iPad to your Mac by using its cord, which will have a USB connector pin to hook them both up. In the RetroGo window, you will see that the iPad has been recognized by the software and has come up on the screen. It will show your device name, the iPad version, and what operating system (OS) you are currently running.
You will see three clear options down the bottom of the window: ‘To iTunes’, ‘To Mac’, and ‘To iDevice’. At the left, you will see a directory of all your media file categories under your iPad name. Ensure that the middle option down the bottom – ‘To Mac’ – is selected.
Find your Videos
Did you take the videos on your iPad yourself? If so, then you will need to go to the Photos category over there on the left hand side. This is because it’s been stored in your iPad’s Camera Roll, along with any photos that you’ve taken.
Choose each video (and photo!) that you would like to transfer to your computer and then select the ‘Export’ button at the top of the window. The software will ask you where you want to save it. Type in a destination and then press OK. All you will need to do is wait for the transfer to finish and you are done!
If you didn’t personally take the video, then it will likely be stored in one of the other categories located to the left of your window. These include Movies, TV Shows, and iTunes U. Browse through each category to find the desired video files on your iPad. You will then need to select them and click on the ‘Export’ button at the top of the page. Enter a save location on your computer, click OK, and then wait for the video file/s to save.
When you’re finished, just exit TunesGo Retro and unplug your iPad. Now you can browse to your video location where you saved it to on your computer and open it up in iMovie to view.
As you can see, it’s all very simple how to transfer videos from iPad to Mac with the right tools. You can transfer other media files as well. So if you’d like to free up some space, once you’ve put the video on your computer, you can delete it from your iPad after. Longer videos can take up a fair amount of memory on your device, so back up them up often to save yourself some extra space on your iPad.
